The Work involves performing one or more tests or examinations in a clinical laboratory incident to the diagnosis or treatment of diseases. This is laboratory work involving the performance of specialized as well as a variety of standardized tests. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking technical employee for assignments and review of work for conformance to procedures. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Receives specimens to perform routine or special tests on such material as blood, urine, sputum and body fluids;
Conducts tests, examinations or analysis in such fields as bacteriology, immunology, hematology, immunohematology, chemistry, histopathology, blood banking or serology according to established procedures;
Evaluates laboratory test data as to necessity for further process of specimens;
Sets up and adjusts clinical laboratory equipment;
Prepares various types of media, reagents, and test solutions;
Prepares smears, stains and slides for microscopic analysis;
Performs microscopic examinations on specimens including gram stains;
Communicates essential laboratory data to physicians and other health officials as rapidly as is necessary to optimum patient care;
Exercises care and safety in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment;
Collects specimens from patients which may include phlebotomy;
Maintains records and prepares patient reports for tests and examinations;
Keeps equipment clean and in working order;
Inoculates and bleeds small animals.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, terminology and equipment as related to a clinical laboratory;
Ability to perform clinical laboratory work with a high degree of accuracy;
Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions;
Ability to maintain accurate records of test results and prepare clinical laboratory reports;
Ability to exercise safety precautions in handling infections and biologically active specimens and in using clinical laboratory equipment;
