As one of the largest laboratories in the state, our CAP, AABB and ASHI-accredited laboratory includes a hard-working team of 200 individuals, about half of whom are certified MLS.  As an academic medical center, we work closely with 25 faculty who direct and support our laboratories.

Last year our laboratory team performed 2.5M billed tests.  Our Core Laboratory is highly automated with chemistry and immunochemistry analyzers connected to a 65-foot automated line.  We are in the process of installing a number of new analyzers including blood gas, urinalysis, immunochemistry and blood bank analyzers.  Our Microbiology/Molecular Laboratory utilizes MALDI-TOF and several molecular instrument platforms.

Our Blood Bank utilizes electronic crossmatching, performs the majority of antibody identifications in-house and issues over 40,000 units of blood products annually.  Our laboratory serves as a training site for 2 local MLS programs as well as our pathology residency and 5 fellowship programs.

Specimens come to our laboratory from our 540-bed hospital, as well as our 20 plus ambulatory sites and Gottlieb Community Hospital, a 247-bed hospital in Melrose Park, IL.

The testing that we perform supports our nationally recognized programs in cardiology and heart surgery, our Level I trauma center, and a growing solid organ transplant program.  Recently, Loyola was named to Becker's List of 100 great oncology programs.

Loyola, a member of Trinity Health—one of the nation’s largest Catholic healthcare systems—is one of the most cost-effective providers in the region, treating the sickest patients in the state of the Illinois.
